On December 1, FC Seoul visited Sangju Civic Stadium and suffered a 0-1 defeat to Sangju Sangmu F.C. on the final 38 round of the 2018 KEB Hana Bank K League 1.
The visitors adopted their traditional 3-5-2 formation. As usual, Yang Han-been wore the keeper’s gloves, with Kim Won-gun, Kim Won-sik, and Kim Dong-woo forming a three-back defense. Go Y0-han, Sin Jin-ho, and Hwang Ki-wook stood in the middle, with Yun Suk-young and Shin Kwang-hoon standing on the left and right wing positions. Yoon Ju-tae and Park Chu-young were deployed on the forefront to open the scoring for FC Seoul.
The game seemed to belong to FC Seoul during the early minutes. In the seventh minute, Yoon Ju-tae penetrated into the front to open the fire for the visitors with a powerful shot to the goalkeeper. Tits for tats followed as Yoon Bit-garam sent his threatening freekick towards Seoul’s goalposts in the 22nd minute,with GK Yang Han-been fending it off with superb defense.The game entered a brief phase of hiatus, but soon enough Seoul broke the silence. In the 39th minute, Shin Kwang-hoon whipped in a cross from the right side, and Park Chu-young secured a chance with a brilliant first touch, but his shot deflected off a defender before going wide the target.
The first half was closed without goals, and the visitors continued to dominate the pitch into the latter half of the match. In the sixth minute, Yun Suk-young intercepted the ball and charged down the field before passing it to Yoon Ju-tae, providing a perfect chance for him along with the goalie, but it was blocked by his superb save. In the 12th minute, Yoon Ju-tae earned a free kick, Park Chu-young made a precise execution, but it flew directly to the goalkeeper, costing the visitors a good chance. In the 19th minute, the hosts made an attempt to find the net from outside the box, and the shot found its way into the goal through deflection. In the 22nd minute, Seoul replaced Hwang Ki-wook with Ha Dae-sung in a bid to bolster their offense. In a following chance, Park Chu-young unleashed a well-calibrated shot from the penalty box with his left foot, but it was blocked by the goalkeeper again. In the 38th minute, Seoul substituted Kim Han-gil in place of defender Kim Won-sik, making it clear that they are hungry for an equalizer. In the 33rd minute, Yun Suk-young lobbed a pinpoint early cross from the left, but Yoon Ju-tae failed to convert it into a score one in front of the target. In the 36th minute, the visitors substituted Jung Hyun-chul for Sin Jin-ho. In the 41st minute, Park Chu-young collected Shin Kwang-hoon’s cross inside the box, offering a chance for Yoon Ju-tae to have a go, but it flew head-on to the goalkeeper again.
Despite theircontinued chase to the last whistle, Seoul had to concede a 0-1 defeat to the hosts Sangju. The match marked the last round for Seoul this year, ranking them at 11th of the 2018 KEB Hana Bank K League 1, which will be followed by demotion matches with the winners from the faceoff between Daejeon and Busan.The first playoff match will be held at the home stadium of either Daejeon or Busan on December 6 at 7 pm, with the second match taking place on December 9 at Seoul World Cup Stadium.
